Fabric help needed!!

I need some help from my sewing/ crafty friends.

For DragonCon I usually get a 3'x6' piece of black foam core to serve as a backboard/ display for merchandise. WE get a new one every year as at the end of the con if can be a little beat up and even if it wasn't it isn't like Voltaire or I could take it on our flight home. I usually pick it up in my Dad's van (which he no longer has) or I have it delivered (which having it delivered to the hotel is complicated and expensive). Not to mention the fact that buying a new one every year gets costly when you add it all up.

This year I want to get a very very heavy duty piece of black fabric. I can throw in some grommets and tie it to the banisters like we did with the foam core last year. It should be easier to manage and something I can pack up and take away to use for later events.  I almost want "curtain blacks" but they are probably a bit heavier than I need, they would be too expensive, and I honestly don't think I can find them that small.

I am thinking a super heavy muslin...or some kind of upholstery material...I don't know.

So, I need suggestions.

The catch, this is something that I need to be able to get in Chicago on Monday (before I leave), in Atlanta on Wednesday (after my arrival), or something I can order this weekend (or Monday) and have delivered to Atlanta by Weds. evening or Thursday morning at the latest.

If you have suggestions of fabric to use or places to shop please let me know.

Thanks!!!

Go the Joanne's 2639 North Elston Avenue, Chicago, IL‎

They have a ton of choices AND the chicks in the fabric department are very, very helpful. Go there, give yourself plenty of time. Look around and then find a lady from the cutting table to help you. Explain your project and she will find all the things you need and possibly even show you how to do the first grommet to get you started. These ladies are SMART. And it's good because it's a craft store, not just a fabric store. Some of the fabric stores up on Touhy and in evanston only know about apparel, but Joanne's knows a lot more. I would talk to them. Grommets or velcro sound like a good bet. Also, don't over look a no-sew option like stitch witchery. It's sold under other names too, but when you mention it to the ladies, they will know what you're talking about. Good luck! Wish I could go to dragon con, I haven't been in years and I miss it.

I LOVE Joann's. Sadly, they don't have anything in black that is heavy enough. :-( They were my first thought.
And I am an addict for stitch witchery. I don't sew but I am often in the position of having to do down and dirty costume type stuff and that stuff saves me. :-)

You can go to Vogue Fabrics in Evanston. They actually have a section in the first room that they call "Midnight" and it's a huge random assortment of black fabric in all thicknesses and weights for $1.99 a yard. Vogue Fabrics is in Evanston just off of the Main Street Purple Line stop.

Re: Walmart--Target
Sadly- too light weight. I looked at those as well as some tablecloth stuff. I need heavy more for supporting weight of pinned in merch an not puckering or buckling- not so much for it being opaque.
But thanks for the suggestion. It may become a last ditch effort solution.

Re: Walmart--Target
You looked at the Eclipse BRAND- not the generic "black out" because the black ones have the 3 layer with foam core---we shopped these for a while because my bedroom faces the rising sun. I swear on my life they aren't crap and flimsy.. But they have to be the 3 layer ones or sail cloth.. Anyway-hope ya can find it.. :)
